The Order:
We’ll be the first ones to admit it: choosing which sushi restaurant to order from for lunch in midtown is nearly impossible. They’re almost all about the same price and similar quality. But some of them have higher delivery minimums, so I always assume that they’re a little better than the others. AnnMarie and I tested out this theory today by ordering from Mishima.

Playing with the high rollers now, I noticed that unlike most places, Mishima does not offer a choose-your-own two or three roll lunch special. So I opted to branch out a little and order the Sushi Regular Lunch Special. Following in my daring footsteps, AnnMarie ordered not one, but two Spicy Tuna Rolls…watch out, Bourdain.
The Meal:
When the order arrived, the first thing I saw was one of the most annoying things about ordering Japanese food for delivery: the miso soup was in a plastic bag and had leaked all over said bag. Chinese food restaurants deliver soup all the time with no spillage, so why does nearly every Japanese restaurant insist on using inferior containers, putting them in plastic bags, and hoping people don’t complain? Japanese restaurants, consider yourselves on notice!

Despite being riled up by the packaging, I really enjoyed the soup once I got to eating. The miso was heartier and more flavorful than the thin stuff I’m used to getting and the sushi pieces were big and tasted fresh. The full soy sauce containers were also a nice touch (instead of tiny packets).

AnnMarie’s tuna rolls were among the spiciest she’s ever had. And she’s from the Berkshires, so she knows spice! They put the mayonnaise on both the top and bottom of the pieces, so every bite had a good kick. On the whole, while we wouldn’t say that Mishima separated itself from the pack, we would definitely recommend it for an above-average lunch at reasonable prices.
FYI – We’re located near Bryant Park in case you want to try Mishima for yourself or give us recommendations for future orders!
