Today’s Order: The Now Eat This Truck! By Rocco DiSpirito

The Order:

Food trucks are having a serious moment in the foodie world. While we remain loyal to the classic Mister Softee, the appeal of trucks preparing and serving a variety of delicious foods is awesome. From lobster rolls to Korean tacos, the cooking that goes on in a moving vehicle is super impressive. What’s even more impressive is when that food truck can serve up delicious and healthy food and deliver it! That’s where celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito’s Now Eat This Truck! comes in.

The food served at the Now Eat This Truck! by Rocco DiSpirito is based on the food of the #1 best selling books of the same name. They are dedicated to making freshly prepared healthy & delicious comfort food available to all. All proceeds go to funding their free lunch Friday program, where each Friday Rocco personally visits a local school to provide healthy cooking instruction and a free healthy lunch for up to 200 students. With such a wonderful cause and a delicious chef behind it, I knew I need to try it. So how did it go?

The Meal:

As I was having an especially hungry day, I ordered my lunch at 11:30AM. I expected the food to take at least an hour as it had to come from the truck which wasn’t located too close to our office in Bryant Park. Perusing the menu, I had a hard time deciding what to order with lots of delicious options on the menu. So, I went all out. To start I got a side salad of Arugula, Basil, & Red Wine Picked Onions. The entrees all looked delicious, so I got two! I ordered the Organic Whole Wheat Lasagna Bolognese and the Faux Fried General Tso’s Chicken. Of course I needed a dessert, so I got a Chocolate Miracle Cupcake (it has the word “miracle” in it… so hello!). When the order came there was a real extra treat… they sneaked in a Vanilla Panna Cotta too! What a delight!

All of the dishes are healthy, so even if I ordered an extensive amount, I knew I wouldn’t be overindulging. Right?!? In the end, the food came in right before a meeting and I could not have been more excited.

And, how did it taste? All of it was really nice. The salad was fairly standard, with a bunch of lettuce and not much added pizzaz. The red wine onions did add a unique and nice flavor, and it was a nice way to start off the three course meal.

After a few bites of salad, I went in for the General Tso’s Chicken. I really liked it! The chicken meat itself is faux fried in whole wheat panko bread crumbs and it tasted wonderful. The dish is served with broccoli, sweet chili sauce, cilantro and no calorie, no carb shirataki Miracle Noodles. While I thought the broccoli and noodles were a tad over-sauced, I ate the entire dish. And a noodle that isn’t really a noodle… well, that’s just miraculous.

My second entree was the Organic Whole Wheat Lasagna Bolognese. Made with whole wheat pasta, low fat meat sauce, zucchini, fat free bechamel, basil and Parmigiano Reggiano, this dish was flavor packed and great! I only took a few bites as I was already super full from the chicken. Lunch for tomorrow!

Both of the desserts were perfection. The Vanilla Panna Cotta had great creamy and smooth texture, but was perhaps a bit too sweet (if that’s even possible). The vanilla flavor from the Tahitian vanilla beans was fantastic and worked really nicely with the special caramel sauce on top. I saved the “miracle” cupcake for a mid-late afternoon snack and was so happy when I remembered I had it in my drawer. The chocolate cake was dreamy and the vanilla cream frosting was so nice. It was a true 4PM Miracle!
